Student Placements

The Student Placement programme offers businesses a 12-month staff resource in the form of an MMUBS student with a 2-year background in Marketing, Finance, Business Information Technology, Business Operations, International Business & Retailing.

Do you need a Student Placement?

Is your business short of resources? Do you have a role within the company or a project that can’t be completed simply because you don’t possess the permanent staff?
It may be an established role, a piece of market research, some analysis of your business or web development that you know should be carried out, but you just don’t have the resource.

Then a Student Placement is an ideal solution. Our programme offers companies a student for a 12-month work placement. These students have already completed 2 years of business-related study. As part of their 4-year degree course, they spend the 3rd year of study within a commercial organisation.

Participating Companies

Our students have been successfully placed with a wide range of blue chip as well as small and medium-sized organisations, including:

Rolls Royce Hewlett Packard BASF
Alcatel Coca-Cola Mercedes
Astra-Zeneca IBM Xerox
Vauxhall Marks & Spencer Ford
Lloyds TSB ICL KPMG
Sony Railtrack PriceWaterhouse Coopers

In addition students have enjoyed placements within the public sector such as NHS Trusts, Councils and Education Authorities.

Courses Offering Placements

All students available to undertake a 12-month work placement are undergraduates who, as part of their 4-year courses, spend the 3rd year on a paid placement in industry. The students available will be studying for one of the following degrees at MMUBS:

BA (Hons) Business
BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology
BA (Hons) Financial Sector Management
BA (Hons) International Business
BA (Hons) Marketing Management
BA (Hons) Retail Marketing

Each course has its own distinctive style and different specialisms, but all have business studies as a core unit.

Every student will have an appreciation of subject areas such as Marketing, Finance, Operations and HRM, and will be familiar with the application of IT skills in a business context. However, you will find that some students will have a more in depth understanding of specific subject areas depending on the degree they are studying and the nature of the options within that degree which they have chosen.

Courses include considerable emphasis on project work requiring thorough research and investigation skills, the ability to work effectively in teams, interpersonal communication, negotiation, presentation, and advanced interpersonal skills. A rigorous programme of assessment has reinforced these skills.

Benefits to Your Business

Students will come to your business or organization with the ability to provide a fresh new view.

Whether you use the student in a variety of day-to-day tasks or for a specific project, their aptitude for clear thinking and their considerable enthusiasm will prove to be a valuable and highly flexible resource. Students are highly motivated to do the best job possible job. Their degree depends on a good performance with you.

Conditions of Employment

The terms and conditions of the employment period usually conform to the normal practices of the employer. The student will fit into the firm’s environment as a standard employee and will be subject to the same set of rules as those adhered to by their colleagues.

Salaries vary between £10,000 and £16,000 depending on the role and location. The Placement Office Team are happy to advise companies in this area.

Start Date and Duration

Placements normally commence in July, August or September. Students must work for a minimum of 36 weeks. However, most placements last up to 12 months.

"I would just like to say thank you for all of the help and assistance that the Placement Office at MMUBS have shown our Company in attempting to recruit for our industrial placement. All of the students who we interviewed for the position were first class, and it proved to be an extremely difficult choice for us to make. We are really pleased with the student who we eventually offered the placement to, so a big thanks for all of your time and effort! After this experience I'll certainly be giving you a call again next time around." Gary Sharp, Human Resources Generalist, Garrett Engine Boosting Systems, Honeywell UK Ltd.
