Dr John Kitching

Photo of Dr John KitchingJohn has worked at the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University since 1989 and has been involved in a wide range of small business research projects for Government departments and other organisations.

John completed his PhD in 1997 investigating employment relations in small service sector enterprises. His research interests are wide-ranging with a particular focus on employment and employment relations, learning and training, the impact of regulation on business activity and performance, intellectual property, and small business/enterprise policy and policy evaluation.

Studies focus on particular aspects of small business activity, relationships and performance. They include projects on:

• financial management practices

• intellectual property

• rural small firms and the National Minimum Wage

• learning and training

• the employment of disadvantaged workers in London

• the impact of the tax system on the cash flow of small businesses

• the impact of business support on rural small enterprises

• the influence of ethnic and linguistic diversity on business competitiveness

• social inclusion in enterprise development

• a UK-US comparative study of fast growth businesses

• the impact of regulation on business performance and growth

• defining and estimating the size of the freelance workforce

• supplier diversity and the 2012 Olympic Games

• small business adaptation and performance during the 2008/9 recession

• the value of small company abbreviated accounts
