About the Centre for Enterprise

The Centre for Enterprise leads on the creation and transfer of knowledge to develop enterprise and entrepreneurship capability.

We bring together business owners, policy-makers and academics who are interested in improving the environment for entrepreneurship and the competitiveness of individuals and firms.

Our activity profile includes:

  • A centre of excellence for research in gender and life-course in entrepreneurship
  • Knowledge transfer in entrepreneurial behaviour and SME (small firm) competitiveness
  • Business engagement , innovation and strategic development of businesses, including social enterprises
  • Intensive practical leadership development for owner managers
  • Accompanying research to inform enterprise policy, regionally and nationally.

Our track record

Since its launch in March 2001, The Centre for Enterprise at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School has attracted over £10m of revenue to support the development of entrepreneurs and their businesses. Recently this included a £900,000 contract award to develop leadership skills in small business owners. An ESRC Business Engagement funding to build capabilities in third sector enterprises so that they can participate in the health sector supply chain.

Previous activities include the 1,000 entrepreneurs who we helped to set up new businesses in the North West region through the New Entrepreneur Scholarship.

The Centre for Enterprise has successfully delivered research and development projects in small business and related areas, via ESRC, Leverhulme and public sector funding, with widespread impacts to our research informing policy and practice in entrepreneurship.
