Responsibilities
Mike is a Research Officer at the Centre for Enterprise. Mike has joined the Centre in January 2008 and his work focuses on the evaluation of research projects, in particular a current ERDF (European Regeneration Development Fund) funded programme carried out by the Centre for Enterprise.
Background
Mike has previously worked in the German banking sector and for Hewlett-Packard and IBM in Germany. He graduated from the University of Pforzheim (Dip.Wirt-Ing FH) and holds an MSC and an MRes degree from Manchester Metropolitan University. He is currently completing his ESRC supported PhD research where he adopts a practice-theoretical perspective on management processes in voluntary organisations.
Research
His research focuses on social practices in organisations. His PhD research applies a practice-theoretical perspective to understanding management processes, taking seriously the commitments of the practice-philosophical literature. This research views social practices as the primary theoretical unit of analysis. It departs from traditional, orthodox perspectives in management research as it portrays individuals as non-entitative beings. Managers are seen to be engaged agents, drawing on a socially mediated, unconscious background which determines which actions are intelligible to perform. Adopting such a perspective affords novel insights into the interrelations of social practices inside and outside organisational ‘frontiers’.
